How wind damages a roof

Wind works on a roof’s weak points:

  • Lifted shingles. Wind breaks the seal strip that holds a shingle down. The shingle may lie flat again, but it is loose and will lift in the next storm.
  • Creased tabs. A tab folds back and cracks across the crease, and water gets in at the crack.
  • Ridge cap and edges. The ridge and the roof edges take the most wind, so cap shingles and edge metal are often the first to go.

How falling limbs and trees damage a roof

A limb or tree does a different kind of damage than wind:

  • Punctures. A branch can go straight through the shingles and into the attic.
  • Impact on the decking. The plywood or boards under the shingles can crack or break, and the roof may sag where it took the hit.

A tree or limb is on your roof: what to do

  1. Stay safe. Keep everyone out from under the tree. Stay off the roof and out of any room with a sagging ceiling. If power lines are down or anyone is hurt, call 911.
  2. Call the tarp line. Call 404.875.6222 and we can tarp the roof to keep water out until the repair. See emergency roof tarping in Atlanta.
  3. Photograph the damage. Take photos from the ground and from inside, from places that are safe to stand.
  4. Do not remove the tree yourself. The tree may be holding broken framing in place. Our tree removal service can take it off safely.

Recent metro Atlanta storms

A few of the 2026 storms that put trees on homes:

  • March 16, 2026: A line of storms crossed the metro before sunrise. The National Weather Service confirmed a brief EF0 tornado in southeast DeKalb County, and trees came down on homes from Sandy Springs to southwest Atlanta. NWS survey
  • July 28 to 29, 2026: Overnight storms knocked a chimney off a home near Kennesaw, sent trees into homes in Clarkston and Sandy Springs, and left more than 60,000 customers without power. NOAA storm reports
  • September 5, 2026: Storms knocked out power to more than 50,000 customers, mostly in Fulton County, and put a large tree on a home in Roswell. FOX 5

If your home was in one of these areas, a free inspection is the easy way to find out. We do not assume every roof was damaged. We look, photograph what we find and tell you plainly whether it is storm damage. If it is storm damage, we will guide you step by step from start to finish with your insurance company. We also give you a written estimate you can share with your insurance company.

Repair or replace

A few missing shingles or one punctured spot can usually be repaired. Replacement makes sense when damage is spread across the roof, the decking has failed over a large area, or an older roof is at the end of its life. We tell you which, and we will not push a replacement if a repair will do. See storm damage repair vs replacement and roof replacement in Atlanta.

Wind and Tree Damage Roof Repair FAQs

How much does wind and tree damage roof repair cost in Atlanta?

Minor to medium repairs, such as flashing, vent boots, small leaks and isolated shingle damage, run $300 to $900. Significant storm damage repairs, such as large sections of shingle loss, decking replacement or multiple problem areas, are $1,500 to $4,000 on average. A large tree impact or structural damage is quoted after the free inspection, before any work starts.

A tree fell on my roof. Should I remove it myself?

No. The tree may be holding broken framing in place, and cutting it can shift the load. Stay out from under it, photograph the damage from a safe spot, and call 404.875.6222 so we can tarp the roof. See tree removal in Atlanta.

Can you tarp my roof right away?

Yes. If water is coming in, call 404.875.6222, Monday through Saturday, 8am to 7pm, and we can tarp the opening until the repair is done. More on emergency roof tarping.

Is wind or tree damage covered by homeowner’s insurance?

Often, yes. Storm damage from wind or a fallen tree is commonly an insurance item, while ordinary wear and age usually are not. If it is storm damage, we will guide you step by step from start to finish with your insurance company. We give you a written estimate you can share with your insurance company. See storm damage and insurance claims.

I do not see any damage from the ground. Could wind have hurt my roof anyway?

Yes. Creased tabs, broken seal strips and lifted ridge cap are hard to see from the ground, and the first sign is often a stain weeks later. A free inspection finds it early.
